In 1992, the project of creating a set consisting of a sake bottle and small cups for tasting it (Tokkuri/Sakazuki), following the most contemporary principles of design, represented a concrete sign, a symbol, of Giorgetto Giugiaro's relationship with Japan, which had already lasted thirty years at that time. After all, sake is the quintessence of Japanese tradition.

The shape given to the very refined white ceramic bottle is born of the reciprocal penetration of two differently-shaped cones: the body cone is broader, while the neck is pointed and turned upside down.

The job of actually making the shape materialize entailed a number of technical challenges. It was only thanks to the single mindedness of the sake firm's owner, Seichiro Uhara, and the expertise of the craft workshops commissioned to do it, that serial reproduction was made possible.
