DESIGNER: Giorgetto Giugiaro
In late Nineties Giorgetto Giugiaro was tasked with designing a front-engine granturismo 2+2 coupe capable of restoring the Maserati brand to its former glory (in which Giugiaro had played a part right from the Ghibli days).
The Maserati 3200 GT made its debut at the 1998 Paris Motor Show, and was warmly received by critics. The surface movements were reminiscent of some of the designer's early work, but the overall aesthetic fulfilled the expectations of the GT fans who were looking to actually enjoy driving the model on the open road and in the city, rather than simply showing it off on the lawns at collector events.
In summing up the motivation behind the project as a whole, Giugiaro explained: "In developing the 3200 GT, we were inspired by the classic Maseratis from the end of the 1960s. From the very beginning, our intention was to take the image forward, emphasizing the car's overall muscularity and giving the new Maserati not only the features of a true GT 2+2, but also the appearance of a fastback. From my very first sketches deciding upon the style of the final model, there were many moments of reflection and verification, followed by changes and corrections, also in light of the aerodynamic testing in the wind tunnel. With the design of the 3200 GT, we believe we have made our contribution to the creation of a vehicle which, at the dawn of the new millennium, could really be capable of reviving the sensations and emotions of the great Maseratis of the past."
