The story of the Bugatti EB112 relates to Romano Artioli, the owner of the brand, and his desire to create, using Giugiaro's designs, a flagship "heir" for the Bugatti family, to be assembled at the striking new complex in Campogalliano.
The Bugatti EB 112 appeared in 1993 and was described as "a masterpiece that arrived out of the blue, making its mark on the history of car design, a dive into classicism supported by a somewhat surprising creative freshness. Relaunching a legend, Giugiaro delved into neoclassic poetry, recovering some of the values of automotive history. For car designers of the world, a fascinating new empyrean was opened up, with its essence, its tastes, and its smells just waiting to be explored."
The designer began careful analysis of the Bugatti sedans of the past (the 1932 Type 55 and the Type 57 S Atlantic of 1936, for example) to gather all of the creative genius behind them, taking from them the aesthetic and functional features that would give the new model the same expressive power. To recreate the Bugatti's traditional sports soul, Giugiaro designed a hatchback model, giving it a generous passenger compartment, equal to that of a prestige sedan.
The result of cutting-edge technology with an aluminum body and carbon chassis never before fitted on a car of this type, the EB 112 made its mark, like every Bugatti, as the synthesis of a high-class sports car.
The car was never put into production, due to Bugatti's financial problems in those years, and only three models exist, one of which is owned by the Giugiaro Museum.
