The name “Sedici” (sixteen) is due to a pun referring to “4x4,” a common definition for cars with all-wheel drive. Construction of the model, along with that of the Suzuki Sx4, takes place in the Japanese manufacturer's Hungarian factories. Designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, the “Sedici” entered production at the end of 2005; unveiled at the Bologna Motorshow in December of the same year, after a few months it was used promotively as the official car of the 20th Winter Olympic Games. The Sedici is characterized by styling with dynamic and robust lines, suitable for an SUV, but it knows how to maintain the handling and drivability typical of a Fiat.

The project that gives birth to the Sx4 and its twin Fiat Sedici starts in the early 2000s when General Motors (shareholder of the Suzuki brand) enters into a joint venture with the Fiat group to produce passenger cars in the European market. Starting with a brand-new basic chassis developed from the platform of the fourth-series Swift, Suzuki engineers created a kind of compact Sport Utility Vehicle that could fill the gap left by the previous Suzuki Liana. The Sx4's design is styled by Giorgetto Giugiaro; details include front headlights that follow the family feeling introduced by the fourth series of Suzuki Swift in 2004, while the tail features wide, triangular-shaped headlights. Wide side glazing and a remarkably spacious cabin are designed to ensure optimal on-board living. Compared to the Sedici, the Sx4 differs substantially in front and rear bumpers and a different, more muscular design. The interior dashboard, on the other hand, is shared without changes by the Italian.

The “good monster” is a clean SUV that makes use of the hydrogen fuel system and is proposed as a hatchback coupe of unprecedented architecture. A third volume has been added to the rear, albeit reducted, to provide more generous space for passengers and luggage, while a third door appears on the right side to facilitate access to the second row. It uses the platform of the Dakar Rally-winning Mitsubishi Pajero and a hydrogen-powered V8 engine developed by German industrial gases company The Linde Group, mated to an automatic transmission. Styling features include 22 inch front and 23 inch rear wheels, glass panels in the lower half of the doors to enhance visibility in town or off-road, and an arrow-shaped roll bar/roof-rack which extends from the C-pillars over the glass roof, without being affixed to it.

Compared to the standard Fiat Croma, the 8V introduces some elements that embellish it. The grille mounts a grille with horizontal rods, slightly lower than the chrome frame flush with the bodywork. The rear light clusters make use of LED technology. At the rear, the adoption of the two mufflers is mandated by the new upgraded 8-cylinder engine; the exhausts are integrated into a spoiler motif. In the “executive” interior, to insulate the passenger compartment from air and noise when the luggage compartment hood is opened, a fixed glass window has been introduced behind the hat shelf.

The name is made up of the initials of Giorgetto Giugiaro and the number 50, to celebrate the first fifty years of the designer's career: "To celebrate fifty years working in car design, I designed myself a Ferrari that I could use with my family."

The GG 50 was created without any input from the Maranello manufacturer but with the approval of Luca Cordero di Montezemolo, who amicably provided the chassis of the 612 Scaglietti. It was therefore devised as a model conceived for fun, tailor-made for its creator, and it is neither a predecessor nor is it futuristic because it privileges comfort, visibility, and versatility in use.

"I didn't want a revolutionary car.” - said Giorgetto - “I wanted to give it my own imprint, but in absolute consistency with the classic Ferrari style. I shortened it by 9 centimeters, following Montezemolo's suggestion that he wanted it more compact, increasing the effect by rounding the edges of the nose and tail: so the eye no longer finds the crest of the fender that sharply defines the end of the side, but a continuous line that runs along the entire car, making it - to the beholder - even more compact."

The most striking change is the transition from the "three hatchback" of the Scaglietti to the "hatchback" of the GG 50, with a fastback tail made more aggressive by a gently curving wing. Also striking is the photochromic glass roof, which merges with the windshield to create an unprecedented continuous surface, transparent and fascinating. The rest is dominated by understated simplicity, founded more on taking away than adding. The headlights taper into two gritty commas, and the side flows smoothly to the two rear wheel arches.

The hood is furrowed by a barely noticeable V that lightens its shape, while the front is bordered by two wide vertical air intakes. The surprise is at the back, in the tailgate, because now the rear window also lifts with the door, opening wide onto a trunk capable of surpassing - by folding down the rear seats - the 500-liter mark, to store golf bags, surfboards, and other sports equipment.

It was unveiled at the 2005 Tokyo motor show.
